Help shape transportation safety in Vernon

The City of Vernon is developing a Safe Transportation Checklist to support safer streets and pathways for everyone who lives, works, learns, and travels in our community.

Building on the Transportation Plan developed in 2025, the Safe Transportation Checklist will provide practical tools that staff will use when planning, designing, operating, and maintaining transportation infrastructure. The checklist will help guide future transportation decisions and identify opportunities to make roads safer for everyone: improve safety for people walking, rolling, biking, taking transit, and driving.

Community feedback will help inform the checklist and identify safe transportation options that work best for our community.

How to get involved

  • Learn about the project and review project information
  • Complete the online community survey
  • Visit us at a community event and share your feedback
  • Tell us about locations where safety could be improved the most and why!

Your feedback will help the City better understand transportation safety concerns, priorities, and opportunities for improvement.

What is the Safe Transportation Checklist?

The Safe Transportation Checklist is a practical toolkit that will support transportation planning and decision-making in Vernon.

The checklist will help the City:

  • Consider transportation safety in future projects and improvements
  • Identify opportunities to improve safety for all road users
  • Support safer travel for people walking, rolling, biking, taking transit, and driving
  • Apply transportation safety best practices in a consistent way

The checklist is informed by transportation safety best practices, including principles from the Safe Systems Approach and Vision Zero, which focus on reducing the risk of serious injuries and fatalities while recognizing that everyone has a role to play in creating safer streets.

Why are we doing this work?

The Transportation Plan identifies transportation safety as a top priority and includes an action to develop transportation safety tools that reflect leading practices and Vernon’s specific needs.

The City is engaging with the community to better understand:

  • Transportation safety concerns in Vernon
  • Locations where people feel road safety could be improved
  • Opportunities to improve safety for all road users
  • Community priorities for future street safety improvements
